Jeebus. I mean — Jeebus. How oblivious can people be to their own cultural and social biases? Despite lots of New Archeological rhetoric about culture as adaptation to local circumstances, archæologists remain particularly resistant to the idea that early humans' way of life was not just a pre-agricultural version of a generalized Euro-American way of life. And the authors are young enough to have read the articles and books that make that clear. It's really quite bizarre. I don't have access to the full article, but the abstract leaves the impression that the authors think every modern-human adaptation that ever was, is represented in the ethnohistorical and ethnographic record — not an uncommon apparent assumption in ethnographic analogical reasoning by archæologists, and utterly indefensible.
