Won't Somebody Please Think of the Hitachis??

From this BBC story:

These are "truly unowned lands", he says. "We're doing exactly what our forefathers did when they came to the New World from the European continent."

Ummm...so...there weren't any Indians here before the Europeans came? Or, since the Indians didn't (at least in Columbian North America) have land ownership in the European sense, they just had no interest (in the legal sense) in it?
