Cartoons Don't Have Any Deep Meaning
I broke down and bought one of the 60-cartoon DVD collections from Warner Brothers. Aside from getting my childhood wish to see three consecutive 'Road Runner" cartoons finally fulfilled, I realized just how much they are cartoons for adults as well as children, laden as they are with pop culture references that, these days, one only recognizes if one is well-read and -screened. But even then, there are plenty of references that can pass by. One such reference I would not have understood without, irony of ironies, a passing familiarity with today's pop culture. In one of the Tortoise vs. Hare cartoons, Bugs Bunny called the tortoise "Seabiscuit."
