My Name is Stacy, But You Can Call Me [Wolf Whistle]
Miss Manners has written several times that Ms (the the honorific, not the magazine) is older than second-wave feminism, which is when most people, I daresay, – and certainly I – had thought it was invented. Those instances left me with the impression that it was a couple of centuries old at least, but as she never cited any sources, it was just an impression.
Recently, the N.Y.T. traced it back to 1901, which, at the time I'm writing this, is over a century ago. Maybe the impression I was given by Miss Manners is true, or maybe it isn't; but in either event I'm glad to see it documented before the 1960s.
Now maybe when I get home I'll see what the O.E.D. might have to say about its origins....
