Hawai'ilicious Imagery'y
Some fantastic images of Hawai'i (the island, not the state) can be found here and here. Even from the plane into Hilo, one doesn't get the same sense of the size of the volcanos. (Of course, there might be some vertical exagerration to these images. I just don't know.) And this site has nice microtopographic rendering.
Just from Googling for maps of Kealakekua Bay, site of Capt. Cook's expedition's anchorage in early 1779, one gets another indication of American ahistoricism: the vast majority of the websites returned is divided between vacation lodgings (the simple majority) and ecotourism. The infrequent mentions of Cook's visit are just that: mentions. This, in a state whose flag incorporates the British Union Jack. It makes me so proud of my compatriots.
